Ray Whitwell, Headquarters, RASC at 1st Airborne Division HQ
We regret to inform you of the passing of our Honorary Life Member and Arnhem Veteran Ray Whitwell on Wednesday 20th November aged 105.
At Arnhem Ray served in the Headquarters, RASC at 1st Airborne Division HQ. He landed by glider as part of the second lift on 18th September. He escaped back across the Rhine at the end of the battle.
Ray was a regular attendee at the September commemorations and also a regular guest of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans at Remembrance Day and the Liberation Day celebrations in May.
I was present when Ray took his famous flight with Arjan Vrieze in a glider and on landing said ‘can we go up again?’ I think he was 101 then.
